About Us

We believe in the power of exceptional food to bring people together, fostering stronger connections and enhancing social engagement. From comforting shrimp & grits to rich and flavorful vegetables and sides to our hearty fried catfish or oven roasted chicken dishes, each item on our menu is crafted with care using the finest ingredients sourced from local producers and trusted suppliers.

The name “JoEllen’s” reflects the deep bond between a mother and son. Joe is the son, and Ellen was the mother. Ellen poured herself into each of her six children, but she held a special place in her heart for Joe. Ellen passed away in 2014, just as this journey of entrepreneurship was beginning. Her love and memory became part of the foundation for JoEllen’s. Today, the restaurant honors that legacy as a place of great food, warm hospitality, and Southern comfort. . .much like a warm hug of a loving mother.

JoEllen’s made history in 2022 as the first Black-owned restaurant in downtown Tallahassee. Since then, it has continued to bring distinctive flavor, warmth, and character to the city’s downtown dining scene. More than a restaurant, JoEllen’s offers food that nourishes both body and spirit. Each plate is a reminder of resilience, pride, family, and the lasting power of love carried through tradition.
